The projects are executed as Public Private Partnership (PPP) on an annuity mode. Thiruvananthapuram City Road Improvement Project (TCRIP) is perhaps the first PPP Project in the country for urban infrastructure development which was completed successfully in the year of 2016. The Global achievement Award for urban planning and mobility is a proof for recognition of the outstanding work on TCRIP. Following this success, KRFB took step into other prominent projects like Kozhikode City Road Improvement Project (KCRIP) and Kannur City Road Improvement Project (KACRIP).
Thiruvananthapuram City Road Improvement Project (TCRIP)
TCRIP is a project conceived by Government of Kerala for the development of Capital City, funded through Kerala Road Fund Board. This project is executed on the basis of Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT), without tolling.
This project includes development of 16 corridors having a length of 42.069 km. TCRIP has been executed by M/s. Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Limited (TRDCL) which is a special purpose vehicle set up exclusively for the project. In this contract, Annuity of 17.749 Crores is made every six months spread over the entire concession period of 15 years. The work was divided into 4 phases. Phase I, Phase II, Phase III, Phase IV which were completed in January 2008, February 2012, February 2015, May 2016 respectively. Improvement of 65 junctions, Flyover of Bakery Junction and Thakaraparambu, Underpass at Palayam Junction, provision of paved footpaths and profuse landscaping including tree planting are some of the key features of the project.
Kozhikode City Road Improvement Project (KCRIP)
The execution of the project, KCRIP is on the basis of Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Transfer (DBFOT). Phase I includes the development of 6 corridors of 22.251 km which was completed and opened for public on 14th November, 2017 by the Hon. Chief Minister Sri. Pinarayi Vijayan in the presence of Sri. G. Sudhakaran, Hon. Minister for Public Work & Registration.
The execution of the project was entrusted with M/s. Uralungal Labour Contractors Co-operative Society Calicut City Infrastructure Development Pvt. Ltd. (UCCIDPL) with a concession period of 15 years. The semi annuity for the project is 23.11 Crores and spread over a period of 15 years.
Improvisation of 28 junctions, 15 signalised junctions, provision of 62 bus shelters and 39 bus bays, installation of 9 Highmast Lights are the salient features of KCRIP.
Kannur City Road Improvement Project (KACRIP)
Government vide order (Rt) No. 1159/2017/PWD dated 03.08.2017 has accorded Administrative sanction for implementing Kannur City Road Improvement Project on DBFOT-Annuity mode at an estimated cost of Rs. 401.467 Crores. The Detailed Project Report prepared by L&T Infra Engineering Limited comprises 11 corridors covering 44.065 km for development – One minor bridge parallel to the existing minor bridge at Thazhe Chovva and two numbers of 2-lane ROBs (one at Pannenpara level cross in Chalad-Pallikunnu-Kunjipally road and the other at Kannur South Level cross in Thayyil Thekilapeedika Road) are the structures proposed to be developed under this project.
Smart City Project in Thiruvananthapuram
The Smart City Proposal of TVM includes projects identified to be implemented in Area Based Development and Pan City Proposals. The area selected for area-based development (ABD) is 2.6% of city’s total area i.e. 5.67 sq.km which covers parts of 9 central wards in the city. The total length of roads identified to be developed as smart roads in TVM SCP is 54 KMs. (approx.). The overall scope of the smart road project is to provide overlay design for the existing road with the detailed strip plans, junction designs, cycle track and footpath design and an estimate of the whole project. At frequent intervals, landscape is to be designed to enhance the aesthetics and environment of the roads. Smart components like CCTV, smart poles and variable message boards for real time management are provided for surveillance and general safety.
Underground ducting, which is mandatory under smart roads project, is the replacement of existing overhead power supply system and/or telecommunication line and/or similar services with underground cables.
Continuous RCC ducts and HDPE pipe duct bank arrangement is proposed to be adopted for underground ducting in this project. The selection shall be decided based on the requirements of the stake holders and site conditions. The manholes for the main utility cable corridor (HDPE ducting) shall be provided at regular intervals according to the requirements of the utility providers. Communication cables shall be accommodated in the main utility cables along road stretches to suit the layout of buildings. Continuous RCC ducting will be provided for the replacement of existing water supply system.
The road geometric design deals with road geometrics such as horizontal and vertical alignment, interventions due to social impact, design safety and road furniture details. For this project road design has been carried out by considering functional and structural aspects as per IRC 86 – 1983. The road signage and markings are placed according to IRC 67-2012 and IRC 35-2015 respectively.
